Whether we agree or disagree with it, Melaka gateway is still a major project that has significant consequences on Melaka’s economy and the people.
The Chief Minister and state government is practicing very bad governance. Since announcing the cancellation, the CM and state government has not explained or brief about the issue.
Even the developer themselves have said they are unable to contact them for further information and was shocked to receive the termination letter.
Termination of such a big project is a significant public interest matter. The CM and state government has basic responsibility to explain to the public about the issue.
In particular, they should explain:
– why was KAJ terminated?
– what is the legal basis and risk involved?
– what is the impact of the termination to the state and people?
– what is the state government’s plan for the project now?
– will it be continued? If yes, who will take over and what is the process of determining who should take over?
These are very basic questions that should be answer publicly from the start. Otherwise, not only the people will be confused, but investors will also lose confidence towards the state government.
Who will dare to come invest in Melaka when you have a state government who can just terminate a project without giving full and proper disclosure?
To be clear, we are not defending KAJ or the project. In fact, we have disagreed with it strongly since the start.
But the main issue now is the absolute lack of transparency and information by the CM and state government. Why can’t the CM just hold a press conference to explain the issue clearly?
