Melaka Takes a Progressive Step Forward in Recognizing UEC for Civil Service

I welcome the announcement by YAB Adly Zahari, Chief Minister of Melaka, that the State Government will recognize the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

As a first step, the Melaka State Government will recognize the UEC as a qualification to enter the state’s civil service.  This policy will be further studied and extended to other areas such as education and state-owned companies in the near future.

The Melaka State Government’s action is a progressive move towards recognizing quality education. The UEC is widely recognized in leading universities around the world and recognizing it as part of civil service entry will increase the talent pool for the State Government.

In less than two months since taking over, the Melaka State Government has done what Barisan Nasional and MCA has failed to do in 60 years with regards to the UEC. The issue of UEC and vernacular education should not be politicized, as the right to education without discrimination is protected under the Federal Constitution.

At the federal level, I urge the government to follow suit and take immediate steps to also recognize the UEC. In the Pakatan Harapan manifesto, we have pledged to recognise the UEC to be equivalent to the existing general qualification for entry into public institutions of higher learning (IPTA). The government should also study the viability of recognizing the UEC for civil service at the federal level.
